Introduction to SBR Process Background

April 8, 2026

1. What is the SBR process?  The SBR process, short for Sequencing Batch Reactor Activated Sludge Process, is a wastewater treatment technology that utilizes microorganisms to operate intermittently in a reactor according to a specific time sequence. Unlike traditional continuous-flow activated sludge processes, the SBR process consolidates multiple treatment steps—such as aeration, sedimentation, and drainage—into a single reaction tank, controlling different treatment phases through a timed sequence.  Key features:  All wastewater treatment processes—from influent intake, reaction, to sedimentation and drainage—are completed within a single reaction tank. The entire process is controlled by a time program, achieving high spatial integration.
II. Development Process  The research on the SBR process dates back to the early 20th century. In 1914, British engineers Arden and Lockett first proposed the concept of the activated sludge method, after which wastewater treatment technology continued to evolve. As a variant of the activated sludge method with intermittent operation, the SBR process gradually gained attention in the global wastewater treatment field due to its advantages such as flexible operation and simple structure.  National在职硕士=1.5-year program + tuition of 7,980 yuan (no need to attend campus) + regular graduate studies from key universities  Graduate School - Professor Jia's Education  View details  1985 – Shanghai Municipal Design Institute designed and put into operation China's first SBR wastewater treatment plant at the Wusong Meatpacking Plant, marking the official entry of the SBR process into China's engineering application stage.  Mid-1980s – China began systematic research and promotion of the SBR process.  To date – SBR treatment facilities have been put into operation in cities such as Beijing, Guangzhou, Wuxi, Yangzhou, Kunming, Shanxi, Fuzhou, and Shaanxi, with an expanding application scope.
III. Current Status of SBR Technology Application in China  After nearly four decades of development, SBR technology has evolved from initial experimental exploration to large-scale engineering applications in China. Currently, this technology is widely used in urban sewage treatment, industrial wastewater treatment, and reclaimed water reuse, among other fields. In recent years, with increasingly stringent national requirements for water environment protection and advancements in automated control technology, SBR technology and its improved variants have played an increasingly important role in sewage treatment for small and medium-sized towns and industrial parks.  Key application cities: SBR treatment facilities have been established in Beijing, Guangzhou, Wuxi, Yangzhou, Kunming, Shanxi, Fuzhou, Shaanxi, and other regions.  IV. Learning Framework for SBR Technology  To gain a comprehensive understanding of SBR technology, we will provide a series of introductions from the following four aspects:
